DisappointmentI can feel it with each breath. Each time I inhale. A peppery fog, clinging persistently to the back of my throat like a filthy plastic bag snagged on a bare winter branch. Smoke. Lining the roof of my mouth. I speak; the words have adopted a gravely, husky tone. That's not my voice. Those aren't even my words. Something sticky, coating my cheek and lips. Licking the tip of my tongue out and tasting it, I know it's alcohol. Sweet, potent. Strong. I'm lucky. It could have been anything. And I can still taste the smoke, lurking under the coffee. Coffee? I don't remember that. But it's there, somehow. Two poisons, fusing together inDisappointment
